It is Apple Season – so we are holding our annual Apple Day with lots of lovely apple crafts and activities. On arrival at Clovelly you will see apple pressing by Gatcombe valley outside the Visitor Centre, so please do bring a bag of apples. Watch them being pressed and taste the fresh juice. Or if you wish, you can bring more for pasteurisation and bottling for which there will be a small charge per 75 cl bottle.
And if you should walk down the village afterwards, the Red Lion at the harbour is stocking a selection of 10 different ciders – Thatcher’s/Lilley’s and Sandford Orchards. On sale for £2.50 half a pint or a flight of five for £10.00.
Crafts and and activities
On entry to Clovelly (free for children under 7 years old), you will find the Apple Day crafts and activities in the Visitor Centre from 11:00-16:00. The round shape of the apple with the great reds and greens makes the apple a perfect base for creating art. So children can enjoy crafts with Artycrafts who will also do a spinning wheel yarn demonstration as well as showing the fleece before it is carded and spun with some finished products for sale. Also visit Sciencedipity to make your own apple scented bath bombs to take home.
There will also be live music, apple bobbing, apple stamping and making corn dollies.
Close encounters with South West Animal Services. Chris Johnson
Animal encounters give people the opportunity to get up close and put their hands on many wonderful animals alongside Chris, who has worked with animals most of his life and is passionate about them.
Farmers market
There will be a small farmers market, including a pick of pumpkins, vegetables, herbs, cider and apple brandy among other stalls. Merry Harriers Garden Centre will also have some of their interesting products on display. Clovelly Cafeteria will be serving apple dishes and Clovelly Fudge kiosk selling cider fudge on the day too.
Harvest Hunt, Garden Tour and Cookery demonstrations
At 13:00 pm, families can take part in a fun Harvest Hunt with the Clovelly Tour Guide, who will take you down around the craftyard and Mount Pleasant. Listen to the spooky stories and look for clues to win a harvest treat back at the Visitor Centre. Please book your place on arrival as spaces are limited.
Again this year, our Head Gardener, will offer a Clovelly Court Garden tour at 11:30.
Then don’t miss our cooking demonstrations with Felicity Sylvester for Apple Cake, Apple Dumplings and Mackerel with Apple Paté at 11:00 and at 14:00.
